i have a naturial cypress pond that drys up because of cannals that where dug near my land.i need to find out if i can dig the pond deeper and increase its size.

You can contact the Corps at the address below. If the land was drained in the last 20 years they would need a permit from the Corps. Draining wetlands without a permit is a serious offense, unless you happen to be the Corps that does it!

On another front, restoring your wetland might not only be a good thing to do, you might end up getting paid for it. Sometimes, as in widening a highway, the destruction of wetlands is unavoidable. Frequently "mitigation" is required, meaning that an offsetting amount of wetland needs to be created. If the Corps doesn't have a problem, you should contact your state Department of Environment (fish & game?) and local environmental organizations. There are lots of resources to help with your project. Good luck, and how cool to own your own swamp!

In most states, the Corps has a joint permit process with the state - usually department of environmental quality or protection, etc., and most states have the permit application avialable on the internet. Try searching for: dredge, fiil, permit, application, and the name of your state; or if you know what the name of the state agency is, then look for the info on their web page.
