You need a permit to hunt something (like a deer)

What if you were lost in the woods (or in any sort of survival situation)

Would it be illegal to kill a deer because you dont have a permit? Even if it is for survival?

What about if you were camping in the middle of nowhere and ran out of food?

A law is a law. If you shoot a deer without a permit, it is illegal.

However, most likely, I doubt a person would be charged.

I do know the state of Alaska has allowances in the laws for killing to survive (at least they used to...its been 15 years since I lasted hunted there). Their regulations said that you can kill an animal to preserve you own life (self-defence or starvation). Once you were safe, the animal remains would become property of the state of Alaska.

In a true survival situation you do what you have to do to stay alive. It is highly unlikely that you would have any trouble with the authorities over killing any animal to keep yourself alive. Just be sure that you can prove that it was an actual survival situation. If you are camping and run out of food that is not a survival situation and killing anything out of season or without the necessary permits and licenses will get you in trouble. In the camping scenerio, you would know ahead of time when you were running out of food and would have time to go home or to the store for more food.

You are asking a question that leaves a few loop holes. I will assume that in each of the situations you are completely in a situation where you are outside of society's reach. When in this situation and survival is your only motive then you are perfectly legal in your actions of taking a game animal to survive if that is your only motive.
I suggest you do not willingly allow yourself to get into situations like you described because you may not get out.

It would be illegal.

If it was for survival, you'd not likely be charged.
Even if you were, would you rather starve - or get a ticket and/or a fine?

If you were camping in the middle of nowhere and ran out of food.
If possible, return via the method you used to get to the middle of nowhere and get more food. Next time, plan ahead better.

If in survival mode the legality of killing game would be the last thing on your mind. Also any authority will even a shred of conscience or compassion would not prosecute you. Although it may require luck to find one. Kind of like self-defense.

I think hunting laws are set up to regulate sport and professional hunting predominately though I'm sure there are exceptions.

It would be illegal. If it would be deemed legal, then everyone who was busted for poaching would say they were lost and trying to survive.
