I had a toothache last week and say a dentist on 12/1. She started the root canal and said to come back in a week to finish (today). After the first appointment, she prescribed me anitbiotcs and pain reliever. She numbed me up today, and as she began to work, I kept feeling sharp pain. She would stop and numb me up more. After about an hour and 8 injections, I was fed up. I told her to stop and told her I could not finish because of the pain. I've had 5 other root canals in the past and they were almost painless. Has anyone even had this kind of pain during a root canal? What should I do now? I need to have the root canal finished, but now I am totally scared of the pain.

I would look for another dentist.to finish the job. . Especially one who will give you IV sedation. It may be costlier, but pain free and you will be more comfortable without the fear of pain.

It sounds like you developed a tolerence to pain medicines. I've had the same problem too and this last time I had a root canal I too had to have multiple injections. Next time, because you will need to finish the procedure. Take some of the pain meds prior to your appointment. And let the dentist know that you have a high tolerence to the pain meds. This happens when you have chronic pain issues throughout your life.

i went in 2 weeks ago to the dentist because i had an excrutiating tooth ache and then they just started a root canal, i went in on friday last week and they finished it, they had to numb me up 2 times because the nerve ran really deep. the only pain i felt was when they were cleaning out the nerve canals. the tooth hurt for about a day after but now it doesnt hurt. one time i remember the pain hurt so bad i ASKED them to numb it, it didnt do much though. if you go to another dentist you will probably feel the same pain. i thought root canals hurted, i am only 12 and i thought that sounded young, the only bad part was my mom had to wait in the lobby

There will be pain and bleeding--but he should have given you more anesthetic so that you didn't feel the pain. You will always feel the pressure, but not actual screaming 'pain'. Most procedures take 2 or 3 visits--and he should have given you antibiotics as well as medication for pain--a prescription.
