I'm not sure if this person will actually get me something or not. How do I find out if he/she is getting me something? That way, if they do give me a Christmas gift, I'll have something to give in return. I'd prefer if this person didn't get me a gift, but I don't want to end up getting something for them and get nothing in return. The whole purpose of getting him/her a gift would be pointless.

a person shouldn't give a gift to recieve one...just tell the person thank you if they do give a gift, that's all that should matter. if you feel really bummed out, buy a ten dollar gift certificate somewhere

You do not have to feel obligated to purchase a gift for this person, regardless of what their intention is. "Hint" around and let them know there won't be any gift exchange. You don't want to get them something with nothing in return? That's really not the way it is suppose to be. You give cause you want to give without expecting anything in return.

If a person hinted to me that they were getting me a gift, it would mean thay wanted one in return. People who do it "just because" don't hint. They just do it.

If you don't want to be put in this position, bring up the subject of shopping, and say you are finished because you are only buying for your family this year. Just make it sound like a casual remark.

If the person still gives you a gift, then just say thank you and how nice of them to think of you.

Merry Christmas!

Every Christmas season I buy a few small, impersonal presents for this very eventuality. Things like slippers, fancy designer stationery, etc., so I always have something to give to a person I did not expect to get a gift from, and they don't feel like I forgot about them.

I had a friend that did that all the time. She was a liar, she never got me a gift, i think in her head she thought if she told me she got me a gift that i would run out and get her one huh! She's such a liar I don't even talk to her anymore and I don't miss it she was full of drama anyway. Be careful you don't need people like that in your life trust me.

Why not tell them upfront not to get you a gift.
OR get ready a gift that doesn't cost much to give to them in case they really did get you a gift.

Or you could get that person a gift, and not give it to them unless they give you one. You can always return it later, or gift it to someone else.

Hmmm this is a tough one.....but I'd probably ask the person (if he/she is a friend of yours) if she wants you to get her a gift. Then you'll probably find out if she's planning to give you one, and then you'll have to decide if you'll get her one too.
