Well it's all in the Bible. He died on the cross for you, He shed His blood, He payed the price for all mankind's sin. If you accept Him, you won't have to pay for your sin. He died because He loves you.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
What you decide about Jesus is what you decide about your eternal soul (yes it does exist)

Jesus was tortured to death by the Roman goverment at the request of a group of Jewish authorities that did not have the legal right to execute him.
Jesus was a man of peace. He did not resist arrest, and he did not seek to fight his way through this situation. He was betrayed by one of his best friends into the hands of the authorities.

He paid with His life. He did it because He loves us that much, and He wants His children to join Him in Heaven. Would just any king go and do that?

None, apparently. According to the story, he lived a while, was tortured and died temporarily. While that might be dramatic for a human, it can't be more than a mosquito bite to a god.
Of course, it is just a story. If Jesus existed and the stories are at all accurate, he was just human and was tortured for pissing off the Romans. Still, others have been tortured worse than him.
