A hiccup is literally a spasm of the diaphragm. The last time I checked, no one was sure what exactly caused this. But it may have changed since then.

Because they're drinking too fast... and swallowing air, and the little thing of flesh that flips to block the airway when drinking is confused. Bill Nye the Science guy explained t better... anyway, the solution is to simply take a few deep, slow breaths and hiccups will be thwarted.

I think because of the carbonation but beer isn't the only alcohol that makes a person hiccup.

It's caused by a build up of air as the liquid travels down the gullet

maybe they were chugging the beers down and this caused the hiccups.
