For as far as I know It's illegal to sell horse meat for human consumption. However that doesn't mean that there aren't any horse slaughterhouses in England. I know a couple of people that own a group of horse meat manufacturing plants and they do have locations in the UK and Ireland but the meat is export only. Where I live it's quite common to eat horsemeat and I never understood why the English make such a fuss of it. It's quite nice meat that has a pretty sweet taste. I can't really say that it compares to anything else I know exept for donkey meat which tastes quite similar.

I remember as a young lad having horse mear during WW2 when there was strict rationing. Horse meat has a bland taste and is very stringy, but it did fill our bellies.

Not for human consumption. Horse meat for greyhounds is available through animal feed suppliers. I have seen it for sale in markets, but I don't know whether this was legal.

I have eaten it in France. It's similar to beef, but coarser textured and sweeter.

I should imagine nearly everyone has tried it without realising it.

I steer very clear of certain fast food outlets just in case.
