instead of s/m/l, we need to order them by tall, grande, and venti. and it's not as the barista's can pronouce any of the words correctly - i've heard them once pronouced grande as "gran-dee", instead of "gran-day", thanks for my italian roommate who actually taught me to pronounce the words to save me from the embarassement i couldn've had from trying to order a drink at starbucks...but my point is, why's the pain when 99% of us don't even speak italian?

The original inspiration for the lingo was Italian but the purpose is branding. Knowing the lingo provides the return customer with a sense of belonging that keeps him returning. The Italian names also impart a gourmet cache that makes the customer more willing to pay four bucks for a cup of whatever. As regards the baristas, there is actually a website called 'Starbucks Gossip', you might be interested in reading this article from their archives on this very question. http://starbucksgossip.typepad.com/_/2005/03/man_always_orde.html

The first time I set foot in a Starbucks, I went to order a frappuchino and I didn't know how to pronounce venti so I just asked for a large instead and the guy behind the counter looked at me with a blank expression on his face and said, "Huh?" He looked caught off guard and didn't know how to react. Haha.

if you said I want a small coffee someone at Starbucks typically would just go get you a tall coffee if you didn't want to use any of the lingo. And as far as a barista saying Gran-dee, they were probably just making fun of the way customers were saying it.

I refuse to use the Starbucks terminology. Even though I know the barista will repeat my order to me in Starbucks-ese, I always order a large, medium, or small. It's a matter of principle.

I have never had Starbucks. The real coffee store I go to I usually get a depth charge.

Because that is part of their marketing machine. They make comsumers think they are getting a better product with these names. That is why Starbucks is making money. We consumers are stupid when it come to stuff like that.

Ps: Tall, grande, venti.........I think they all taste like crap.

Starbucks has to strive to keep us paying such a high price for the coffee. They need any specialty catch phrases they can get.
