I have for awhile now. In my state you can not even get flood insurance in a flood plain so why rebuild below sea level. When New Orleans was built, they did not know what sea level would mean but we do now & it is a complete waste to keep pouring taxpayers' money into a lost cause. Most people have found other jobs & moved to other areas, those who haven't do not want jobs- they want handouts. This jig is up!

AND YOUR place may well be hit also. And the govt will not give up on New Orleans anymore than it would give up on Washington or any other place. You say "cut our losses"? what losses? The greater percentage of FEMA money has gone to contractors, not the people who lived there. Tens of Thousands are still awaiting insurance coverage money.
Except for the worst hit, people have already returned to New Orleans and are slowly rebuilding their homes and lives.
So look around. What you have can also be taken from YOU. In the blink of an eye.
Remember that.
(added note: Your govt is pouring tens of billions of dollars into a place called Iraq. A field of carrion would better describe it. ..and you have the nerve to complain about one of our own states! )

I think we have dumped enough resources into that place to build several cities. I was down there only a few months ago. There is still trash on the streets and many of the traffic lights weren't even working. In some areas, the only restaurants were on wheels. I even saw a guy urinating on the street. If these people don't think enough of their city to even help clean up the trash, then I see no reason to continue to shovel money into the ground. The government in that area is corrupt. The mayor is incompetent, yet the people elected him to office. The guy is a racist. Let him finance the rebuilding of his city himself. Mississippi has come along much farther in a shorter time than New Orleans. And parts of Mississippi was hit just as hard. Just light a match and let it burn.

There is much history that is connected with New Orleans. Jazz, food, and other important parts of history would be lost. There are many projects going on right now to reconstruct the cities. Any city in the States should be rebuilt if destroyed. That's like saying everyone should move out of Kansas. Look how many tornadoes hit, they keep rebuilding. Your home is what you know.

YES they should be worried about the flood water rising in Florida and start moving people out before it is too late. The worlds oceans are going to keep rising so the Gov better stock up on more MRE's,not to mention when California goes for the big plunge(but if you stick your head in the sand it will never happen either)JUST DON,T WHINE ABOUT IT!!!

How about getting some real engineers down there. Not the bloody crooks Nagin appoints or selects to do the job. It could be saved , no doubt. But start with the major problem That useless levee....all those piles of sand against 180mph winds and rain. What are they thinking?

WOW, did your question generate some insults. Personally, I think it should be rebuilt for historical and economic reasons but they really need a new leadership because Ray Nagin has been screwing the pooch on that city for way too long.

To give up on New Orleans is like giving up on rebuilding ground zero...if someone came by and cut your ear off would you give up on hearing? No. You move forward, that was home to thousands (i know they were poor) of slave desendents who had little education and that made the situation worse but that was there only home. Rich American history there that makes the Statue of Liberty look too young to drink. To turn your back is a punk move..and to those who say forget New Orleans I got two words for you and it aint Merry Christmas!

Not me. New Orleans is a critical part of our nation's economy (the port serves the entire Mississippi and Missouri River drainages) and our culture.
Risks from future floods, both to life and property, can be minimized through proper construction of houses, levees, evacuation routes, and shelters.
By your logic, we should abandon other places like the Netherlands.
