Maybe this is the wrong place to ask this but I would like to find a resource (text / video / DVD) which gives a general overview of world history.

Yes, there are several which SAY they do but all the ones I've found are very Europe - North America focussed with very little about the history of Africa, Asia, South America and the Pacific.

National Geographic, Oxford University Press and Penguin all make almanacs or general world history books. They are usually quite good, particularly the NG + OUP ones, which give a good basic non-controversial understanding of major events.

Apart from those, this website - http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/modsbook.html - is really excellent. It has modern, ancient and medieval history sourcebooks, as well as sourcebooks for regional history (Asia, Africa, etc.) The sources offer a number of different types of view, but you need a basic understanding of the era or event you are looking at to get the most out of it.

There is a series of books, I can't remember the exact name at the moment, but it takes one historical figure, tells about their life and country, and then talks about what was happening in the rest of the world in their time period. The World of Abraham Lincoln was one of them I believe (not sure it the title's quite right), and I also remember seeing ones about George Washing and Christopher Columbus among others, I believe. Hope that helps.
