Coca Cola did not invent Santa Claus, he was invented hundreds of years ago, they just invented what he looked like. His hair, beard, red suit that he wears and him being a fat, jolly old man etc. In some countries apparently he wore green clothes and other countries he is a little elf like creature!

There's a particular picture of Santa Claus dressed in Coke's house colour (should that be color - I pronounce it culler), that belongs to Cocacola. Santa Claus is the American mixture of Saint Nicholas (Sinta Klaus to the Dutch settlers) and the English Father Christmas. There is an urban myth about Coke making him red - but it's not true. The American version has always been red, and usually more scarlet than the Cocacola colour.
Old Father Christmas was a character in mediaevil mumming plays. He was a depiction of the old pagan midwinter festival that involved eating, drinking and bringing trees indoors (any of this sound familiar?) He was reintroduced in Victorian times and was usually depicted in a long coat that was either red or green (the colours of holly).
St Nicholas was an East European bishop who is the patron saint of children. One of the legends about him involved giving a dowry to some orphan girls by getting his servant to climb down their chimney and put gold in the stockings that were airing round the grate. (Typical bishop, get someone else to do the dirty work). He remains popular in Holland and Northern Europe and is usually depicted in green bishop's robes with a mitre.
Why the American version wears a red track suit and rings a bell beats me!

Coca-cola did not make Santa red...that was a very clever marketing ploy. Probably the best ever....Victorian cartoonists (Thomas Nast) and others dressed Santa in red on a regular basis. Check if you don't believe me....... Get over this Coca-cola answer, your wrong.

Santa claus originated from St. Nicolas the patron saint of children. Nothing to do with any soft drinks company.

Every year we have coca cola adverts showing that Santa Claus is linked, so I think so.

Hardly. There was actually a person named Kris Kringle(sp?) that gave toys and stuff to kids. The legend of Santa Claus came from the story of Kris Kringle but I don't quite remember how. Too much wine today!

not santa claus, as there was already saint nicholas and other equivalents, but he was originally dressed in green and coca-cola were the ones that made him red.
hope that helps!
