basically, the myth says that 144,000 people chosen by god will experience the Rupture all at once. the rest of us will get to live with Tribbles (like on Star Trek) for seven years.
It was definitely going to happen in the 80s. That's what the fundies said in the 70s, anyway.

There are many Christians who believe that the second coming of Jesus Christ will be in two phases. First He will come for believers, both living and dead, in the "rapture"; read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17. In this view, the rapture—which is the transformation and catching up of all Christians, dead or alive, to meet Christ in the air—will be secret, for it will be unknown to the world of unbelievers at the time of its happening. The effect of this removal, in the absence of multitudes of people, will, of course, be evident on earth. Then, second, after a period of seven years of tribulation on earth, Christ will return to the earth together with His church, the saints who were raptured (Matthew 24:30, 2 Thessalonians 1:7, 1 Peter 1:13, Revelation 1:7). He will be victorious over His enemies and will reign on the earth for a thousand years (the millennium) together with His saints, the church. After the thousand years, living unbelievers and the wicked dead now raised to life will be judged at the great white throne judgment. They will then be cast into the lake of fire, while the saved will live forever with Christ in a new heaven and earth (Revelation, chapters 19-22).
Many other evangelical Christians believe that Christ's return and the rapture will not occur until the seven years of the tribulation have ended. As far as the latter view is concerned, the rapture will not be secret, since it will be part of Christ's visible and triumphant return to end this present evil age (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17). At this point, interpreters differ as to whether there will be a literal thousand year reign of Christ on earth or whether the white throne judgment and the new heaven and earth will immediately appear.
The crucial matter is not that all Christians agree on all details of what will occur in the final events of this world's history. Some of these events and their order of occurrence have simply not been made clear in the Bible. What is important is that all Christians hold in common that Christ will ultimately return bodily, visibly, gloriously, to reign and rule with His resurrected and transformed saints forever and ever. The details of this great event will be made known in God's own time.

You mean the rapture. It is the time just before the antichrist takes control of the whole world and basically all hell is going to break loose, when Jesus will come and call all his believers, dead and living to meet him in the air to escape this hell on earth for 7 years. This 7 years is called The Tribulation. The word rapture is not in the Bible but it means to be carried away which the Bible says will happen in the future just before the end of the age.
I know it is very difficult to sum up but in a nutshell that is what it is. It's all in the Book of Revelations in the Bible. The believers and followers of Jesus Christ will disappear in the blink of an eye to be with Jesus while the earth is being judged for 7 years. *By definition, Rapture is the belief that faithful Christians will be bodily caught up from the earth, suddenly taken out of the world, to be united with the Lord “in the air.” The word “rapture” is understood by some persons, but not by all, to be the meaning of 1Â Thessalonians 4:17. The word “rapture” does not occur in the inspired Scriptures.
1Â Thess. 4:13-18, RS: “We would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep [“those who sleep in death,” NE; “those who have died,” TEV, JB], that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.” (Evidently some members of the Christian congregation in Thessalonica had died. Paul encouraged the survivors to comfort one another with the resurrection hope. He reminded them that Jesus was resurrected after his death; so, too, at the coming of the Lord, those faithful Christians among them who had died would be raised to be with Christ.)
Not everyone has the same idea or in agreeemnt as to what the rapture means. On any matter, it is beneficial to compare our thoughts with what the Bible itself says. The "rapture" has been explained as an escape plan for Christians. Many feel that this is the way they will escape the coming great tribulation. What does Bible really teach? We certainly want God’s protection at that time, and I find to be very encouraging some texts that show how we can benefit from it.
(Zeph. 2:3) RS: “Seek the LORD [“Jehovah,” NW, AS, Yg, By], all you humble of the land, who do his commands; seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the wrath of the LORD.” (Also Isaiah 26:20; Will all true Christians perhaps be taken to heaven after the great tribulation? Interestingly, the Bible shows that God will safeguard some faithful ones right here on earth.)
(Prov. 2:21, 22) "For the upright are the ones that will reside in the earth, and the blameless are the ones that will be left over in it. 22 As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it." (Notice that the scripture does not say that such upright people will return to the earth but that they will remain there. That is in harmony with God’s purpose when he first created Adam and put him in Paradise, is it not?)

its called the Rapture (from the Greek raptize meaning snached away)
1 Thessalonians 4:
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Rupture is when something bursts, Rapture is not biblical, but supposedly people are supposed to be taken away in secret.
The Bible gives indication in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 that when Jesus comes He will shout and trumpets of God will sound and the dead in Christ rise from their graves. Doesn't sound very secret to me.

Rapture is the end times. You can read more about it in the back of the Bible. Rupture is something that breaks.

That is because it is spelled RAPTURE.
The Lord will come back and take his "saints" (those who are saved in Him) to Heaven with Him- and we are to meet Him in the clouds- this is what it says:
1 Thessalonians 4:17
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

don't worry about the rapture, it ain't gonna happen the way anyone is predicting and none of them know when it will happen either. it is loosely based on the scripture and not very well synchronised with all scripture, hence since it became popularised everyone since has been wrong.
