The numbers of believers vs. non-believers is inflated. There are many non-believers in the closet because being outed would cost them jobs, relationships, political positions, sales etc.

Yes, a majority of the world's people believe in a god.
According to wiki, 33% are christian and 21% muslim. This means that a majority of the world's people even believe in the same god! Isn't that frightening? About 25% do not believe in gods.
Regarding your comment: "or is it that they just can't be bothered going up against all those that do" - does this mean that you think many people believe in god as a result of peer pressure?

Yes I would say that the majority of people do believe in a God. Certainly in the west and the east.

I think the majority of people believe in something, but it is not "god". Sometimes it may be god, sometimes allah, sometimes bishnu or krishna or buddha or odin or anything along those lines.
Not declaring your belief publicly doesn't mean you don't have any, but just that you're confident enough in your belief not to need to justify it against the others.

Does it matter?
If "most" believe in God, you will use that fact to label yourself in the minority that isn't "blind to the truth". You'll use it it make yourself feel more special with the answer.
If "most" do NOT believe in God, you will say, "See most people don't even believe in God". and use it to puff yourself up in that way. I think you need to really examine your motivations for asking these questions.

They believe in a god or gods, not 'god'. There are a lot, but people seem to talk like there's just the one big Christian god that everyone worships. Not so.

why go up against us?
just live out your life not believing
then enter the next life wishing you had at least investigated the possibility

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
God is He besides Whom there is none worthy of worship, the Living, the Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining.
