Most definitely! Do you know that if were to simply make the change to diet soda alone, you would lose 15lbs a year? I know because I did it. I made it a practice not to drink calories if I didn't have to. The only calories I drink are from milk ( once in a blue moon). I'm amazed at the people who guzzle juice and soda pop like there's no tomorrow.
Try limiting sweets to once a day--in a small serving, but make it something you really want and like when you eat it.
I have a sweet tooth and found that if I told myself that I could have anything I wanted--I didn't crave it so badly. Once I tell myself I can't have it--I go nuts! I may not have thought about a peanut cluster for 3 months but then I gotta have it when it's off limits.
Also, try relishing your treat with a hot cup of tea or coffee ( with Equal or Splenda)

For sure, sweets and carbs can put on tremendous weight. Both are packed with calories and consider you need to burn around 3,500 calories to lose one pound of fat. So the less you consume the better off you. The Atkins Diet which cuts out both and concentrates more on protein consumption is a very successful diet.
