RE Bankruptcy and pets?
My husband is swearing that he remembers the bankruptcy lawyer saying that getting a new pet before bankruptcy is something they don't recommend doing. He is filing but I am not (we've only been married 6 months and my credit is clean) Can anyone who's gone through bankruptcy please tell me if they've heard of this or is my husband just looking for an excuse to not get a pet? lol

if you're filing bankruptcy, and you spend anything on the credit cards for 6 months prior to doing the bankruptcy, you still have to pay for the item. it's just saying, don't buy a yacht on your visa, declare bankruptcy a month later, and then expect to keep the yacht. merchandise you acquired on those credit cards (recently) is fair game. hold off any major purchases until the bankruptcy is done and over with. would they actually try to take the pet as a collateral? i don't know. but they just might try; they made a suggestion to take my dad's 1 year old dirty greasy grill back...(they never actually did!)

Double check the bankruptcy law in your Country/State...Sometimes, (it happened to me) when a husband goes bankrupt and the wife doesn't the debts then go onto the wife's credit.. Please check that out, I ended up with tons of debt.
The pet, all your husband is saying is that the bankruptcy trustees will be looking at "money" spent, and how come he had that kind of money to spend on a dog, and not on his creditors.
Because you're married to him, they could look at you and your ability to pay debts... and the dog would have been money you could have paid toward your husbands creditor.. doesn't matter that he had the debts before you got married, "your married now and he's declaring bankruptcy "now"..
Please check it out..

Well if you are in such a financial shithole that you are filing bankruptcy, getting a pet will not make it better.... Pets DO cost money to feed and unexpected vet bills are not cheap either
There is making a change in your life for the better and then there is doing tha same stupid crap over and over... By what you just said, which one are YOU headed for ???

worry about one problem at a time, the stress of divorce and bankrupcy is bad enough much less the problems encountered by an animal and that can wait awhile until everything settles down, the animal ownership should have no bearing whatsoever on your credit report, by themselves animals are not a financial burden, unless you are in a business like farming, animal breeding veteranarian work or the like.

Well, I have never heard of that, however...it does kind of make sense.
If you can't pay your own debts right now, how can you care for a pet? They require food, shots, medical attention, toys, beds, letter...etc.
Focus on taking care of yourself 1st before you take on the responsibility of a pet.

I don't recommend buying anything when thinking about bankruptcy. Why would you take on an new financial obligation when you can't afford your current obligations?
