Well my good freinds Mom just approached me and asked if I would tutor and help with her younger son's homework. I said yes but she wanted to know how much I would want. See I have been very close to this family for many years so I don't want to rip them off but it is a real pain to get the kid to do his homework. When i babysit him I always get $8 an hour but I have noticed when you get a tutor from my school they always charge$10 an hour and they are students as well. So I was just looking for some pricing suggestions

9 dollars an hour sounds good. a little less expensive than normal tutors, but a little bit more than the easier job of babysitting.

If $10 per hour is the local rate and you can do just as good of a job, then don't be afraid to charge $10 /hour. You may be surprised to know that parents don't mind paying a little more for their kids if they know they are getting their money's worth. (I'd rather pay $8/hr for a babysitter that actually watches and plays with my kids than pay $5/hr for someone that sits on the couch with their cell phone and the TV remote and zones out!)

The way you could show they are getting their money's worth is to be very prepared before hand for the tutoring session. Maybe give the parent a call the day before and discuss the goals they have for the next session. Have a notebook and take notes as you tutor and discuss with the parent at the end. Give them feedback on specific things that their child did well or may need help. Maybe some ideas for the parent to practice with their child. Don't just say "we did some math. He did good." Be specific.
