I think there are a few different kinds of angels. I think that there are guides and helpers for us here and some of them are family and friends, still in the spirit existence that help, some are general angels and some are the head angels so to speak.
See, I feel like we are creatures of spirit here on the physical plane to learn something specific. I think that god is the energy that powers this existence and I think that we can guide our journey by asking "home" for help with our thoughts. So that leaves some of us still waiting to return or who have come back already. It might also require kind of customer service angels to keeps tabs on everyone and make sure that everything is working properly (it is a big job after all), and then the supervisor angels, who can handle what the others can't.
I found these really fun on-line Angel Cards. Maybe you will be interested in them:

I believe that, unlike God, angels and deamons can't be omnipresent. Meaning they can only be in one place at once. Now, as far as everyone having an angel, I don't know. Maybe there are more humans than angels with that task and so angels take on more than one child.
Of course, there could be an abundance of angels, as God would have forseen the number of humans that would occupy the earth. And so prepared.
But, of course, it's all speculation. The bible doesn't say. It's just one of those things you can ponder, but never get a straight answer too. Hope this helps.

The bible teaches that there are at least two hundred million angels.
(Revelation 5:11) I heard a voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders, and the number of them was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands
The bible does not describe the exact mechanism by which Jehovah dispatches the angels, but it seems unlikely that each individual human requires the entire services of an angel, considering the power each angel must possess.

We know precious little about angels. The Bible tells us that they do exist and that there are many, many of them.
The Bible does not tell us that every person has a guardian angel, but that wouldn't be inconsistent with the Bible's teachings. The idea that we all have a guardian angel comes from the Catholic Church. So, if you're a Catholic then it part of your tradition.

There are too many angels to name. I tend to believe Michael, Gabriel and the others mentioned in text are reserved for special assignments. There are MANY angels around you at all times and you never have any idea.

Yes, the Bible tells us that the angels were witnesses to the creation of the world, which indicates they were created long before that great event. God asked Job, "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation ... and all the angels shouted for joy?" (Job 38:4,7).
The important thing, however, isn't when God created the angels—but why He created them. The Bible tells us that the angels were created for one reason: to do God's will. To put it another way, they were created to be God's instruments or agents to carry out His work. (In fact, the word "angel" actually means "messenger" or "agent".) The Bible says, "Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word" (Psalm 103:20).
Just as the angels are largely unseen by us, so also is their work. I am convinced that when we get to heaven we will be amazed when we discover all the things God did through His angels—including their protection over us in times of danger. (This includes not only physical danger, but moral and spiritual danger, as well.) The Bible says, "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways" (Psalm 91:11).
We aren't to worship the angels or give them too much attention; Christ alone is the source of our salvation. But thank God for His love for you—a love so deep that He sent His Son to die for your sins, and now sends His angels to watch over you.

According to the Bible we have them assigned to us probably from our birth (Matthew 18:10). I hear from people who have had near death experiences and seen and talked with them that they are always present, but just invisible to the physical eyes. I know for a fact that only when we pray or someone else prays can they help us.
