If we were to let Iran help w/ the withdrawl of US troops in Iraq, would that lesson the tension between the US and Iran? So by the sounds of it, this would work out. The US could be deemed victorious and leave; which would make both Republicans and Democrats happy. So the war would be over, the 2 parties in Congress could focus on bigger threats. So by the sounds of it all, it would be a good thing for America, right?

But the thing I cant think around is that Iran and Syria have been funding money and weapons to the insurgents in Iraq. Whos to say that when we leave, that they help the insurgents and take back Iraq?

G- Nice point and I get what you mean. But by that logic; why would Iran have funded them from the begginning?

And again G, if Iran wants the new Iraq Nation to succeed, why dont they have troops there helping the US?

I really wonder how much they have been funding insurgents, especially Iran...

the way I see it, Iran wins the more stable that Iraq is... why is that, you may ask?

because the majority of Iraq is the same religion as Iran's leadership and in a democracy, majority leads...

so the elected government leaders of Iraq have already expressed friendly gestures toward Iran, being the same religion and all...

so... why would Iran want to jeopardize that with insurgents?

the instability caused by the insurgents is the only thing keeping the U.S. there, and once the U.S. leaves, there is nothing to keep Iraq and iran from being best friends?

so promoting the insurgency would be like keeping your enemy in your backyard?

EDIT: do you really think Washington would just be like "sure, send some troops over to help"... not that I would do it if I was Washington either... granted...

and I'm not sure how much they are supporting them... there have been Iranian weapons found, but weapons pass through many hands in the middle east, from what I've heard... everyone doesn't always know where they are gong exactly...

While it's quite possible Iran has been assisting their neighboring Shi'ite brothers, or perhaps it were only groups inside Iran who took initiative, perhaps a risk should be taken here?

I mean the current elected majority in Iraqi government is Shi'ite Muslim and some secular Shia and slightly pro-Iran. Most of the insurgents are Sunni Muslim or ex- Ba'ath party who fought Iran for years. So Iran getting closer ties with the country might result in a more stable country, when they'll replace the foreign presence which causes some of the Shi'ite rebellion.

It might not solve all instability but better it being a drain on Iran than on the USA, or not? Let someone else carry the load for a while, maybe the country will never unite at least the US troops are not there to get hurt in all the in-fight.

So since stability is good for them, I think Iran will never 'help' the insurgents on any large scale but after getting involved would try to strengthen the current government although the Kurds might be resistant to this idea. A stable Iraq is the only thing that is good for Iran, unless it's one were 100,000 GI's are standing on the border looking into Iran.

To answer your question: the Middle East should step up and take responsibility because the presence of foreign troops is destabilizing. Iran should get involved under UN supervision but perhaps also other countries, Saudi Arabia? Turkey? We also have to think about Kurds, Soennies and Turkmen part of the population who all have their own problems and agenda.

I don't completely understand your question -- I don't see Iran helping with withdrawal except for them to step in and take power as soon as we are gone. Iran having control of Iraq would not be good for America or any other place in the world.

We are completely helpless and at the mercy of Iran and Syria. But, if we leave Iraq and it gets worse, THEN Iran and Syria will have to worry about refugees flooding their borders and if Iran backs the Shiites, then Syria will back the Sunnis, and THEY'LL be at each others' throats.
