I don't have an Akita but this has happened with my dog recently. The lady saw us coming, gave us a dirty look, and moved as quickly as she possibly could, without running, behind a car. We were at a fundraiser for a local animal rescue organization so it's not like the woman didn't like dogs..She just didn't like MY dog. I usually just laugh at people like that because of their -complete- ignorance.

I have worked in the veterinary field for many years-and I do have biases against certain breeds because sometimes the stereotypes are true. For example--I would say 90% of Irish Setters coming to the animal hospital are going to be friendly regardless of training, where 90% of Akitas coming into the clininc will need to be handled with extreme caution--remember what ceratin breeds were meant to do. Herding dogs instincts to herd are there even if you never treach them the proper commands. Was your dog off leash?

Some people are rude no matter the subject. Just wait till you have a teen with a nose ring and see what happens....
The only thing I have to compare is when my dog does his "business". People always give dirty looks... so, I make a big production of pulling out the "baggie" while he's in the process, so they KNOW I'm NOT going to LEAVE it there.

I do not blame ppl for being scared of dogs maybe there is a reason that they are scared . Usuallly if I am walking my big dog I come in contact with other ppl that are giving me a dirty look I will tell them to wait and my dog and I will be glad to go to the other side of the street if they will just wait there untill I do so . Maybe you can try that? good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

This has not happened to me but, Ik now someone who has had that happen. They quickly left and didn't go back if they saw the same person the next day at all. So that's my advice is to leave quickly smile and don't go back if you see them again. It's not a good sign for you or the dog.

How frustrating!
This couple probably had a bad incident with a dog like yours... and convicts your precious pooch by association.
It happens also to pit bull, german shepherd, dobie, and other large breed dogs.
Don't sweat it. They're probably not "dog people" anyway.
You continue to walk your Akita, maybe if you continue to run into them and show them what a great dog yours is, they'll change their mind, otherwise, who cares what they think!?
