It took me 6 months, but that was years ago. The command sponsorship took the longest. We got married in AIT, so Germany was his first permanent duty station. The unit gave him a hard time and the paperwork took forever. Now, it takes much less time. It'd say in 2-3 months, you should be there with him.

I know you'll need your passport. You don't get a civilian one though. I tried that to save time. I had to wait for my paperwork to get the one they issue military family members.

Good luck!!

I am guessing that it will be about middle February before you can head this way. The second answer IS correct in the Passport thing. You need the Gov't Passport due to the SOFA stamp that is in there...also, if you plan on getting a Job over here, you will need that one. A regular one won't work...

You can still apply for the Passport at your nearest Base ID/Passport Office. It can take anywhere from 12-16 weeks to arrive. You will not be able to pick it up until you have the Orders showing Command Sponsorship. But at least you will have the Passport in the Office waiting for the Orders.

Also, have you gotten all your shots? There are some shots that you need to get, check with your Clinic. Just tell them that you are going to Germany and they will be able to tell you what you need. Do you have your EFMP done? You will need to have the DA-5888 Sep 02 Edition Section 8 signed by your DH's S-1 if you don't have it already.

Any other questions, please feel free to email me. I just went through this recently.

i would say a month or two. the military sits on paperwork awhile. i know because i was in the army stationed in hanau, Germany. another option instead of waiting for his paperwork to get processed is to get a passport and just go to Germany and stay in a hotel until you guys get a house. that's what i did when i got out of the military and married my husband who was stationed in Germany where i used to work, except we just stayed with his friends instead of a hotel.

and you do not need a special passport to be with the army in Germany regardless of what the woman below me says. if you are on his orders and are command sponsored then a passport isn't needed at all. but getting one and just going over there will get you to see him faster. i just left Germany about 7 months ago, it's changed since the 80's.
