I don't know ANY 5 year old that is willing to sit for more than 5 minutes! but does he have a wheel chair that he can get out of the house for a walk with someone? Video games is another suggestion or movies. Another thing that works for my kids (2 boys! 11 and 9) is go to Walmart in the craft section and look for things for them to paint (orderments, sports theme things, animals, etc...) that will keep him busy for hours!
Most of all....buy his mother some Tylenol for herself, she'll need it. Good luck.

I know the feeling of a child being in a body cast, my son has a bone disease called leg calve perthes and has been in casts a few times. We got him coloring books and crayons, board games to play with others, a playstation or another game that you can put close to his bed and he can play. A game boy or handheld game. Reading some books together. Watching tv. You can also ask the nephew and mother what they like and try making Christmas cards and thank you cards together. Also they can make handmade christmas orniments together. I hope he gets better soon and he's in our prayers. God Bless

The only thing I know to suggest is reading him stories that he's into or playing games like I spy. Most 5 year old boys don't like to sit still for very long at all, but keeping their minds off of what's wrong with them can help. I've fostered a 5 year old boy and girl, and whenever they were sick, they got a lot of candy and watched a lot of cartoons in my lap.

Conversing with him a lot; about all topics, give him books with pictures; read to him stories; play board games; let him see the garden; breathe air outside if he can; play cards;dominos, built some puzzles or car models and the like; make art works;if he's a grade school; fetch his homework from school and do it at home; that he will be expecting home works and at the same time he is not left from school work; coloring, making his own photo album; suggesting to mum his favorite food for her to make everyday; listening to nice nursery songs......Hope he get well soon!

1. Let him roll dough into balls and place them on a cookie sheet, bake and enjoy!
2. Read stories.
3. Watch a video.
4. Sing songs.
5. Draw on his cast.
6. Draw pictures on paper.
7. Play pretend games (for example, he is a taxi driver and you are his passenger. Ask him where he is taking you. Give him play money for the trip.)

I normally don't promote video games but in this instance I think it would be a good past time. There are educational ones. Coloring.Movies.
