believe it or not fleas are transmitted by mosquitos. Although in the winter there are no mosquitos in most cold places, warm states can see fleas all year round. The fleas can live in the evironment for up to 6 months, especially if they are feeding on an animal. They also live in your animals bedding, any furniture they sleep on, even people. I got fleas from my mother in laws cat 15 years ago. It was painful. They started biting my legs near the base of my pantleg where my socks started.
The best treatment for your cat is Frontline Plus that is purshased OTC at any vet office. It is a monthly treatment and should be used for 3 months. Like I said they live in the environment and should therefore be treated aggressively.
Don't use a flea collar or any grocery store product. They are junk. What you can use the grocery store product for is cleaning your house. We tell the clients at work who have animals with fleas that after you treat your pet with Frontline Plus, you can put a flea collar in your vacuum bag and then sprinkle flea powder on your carpet then vacuum very thoroughly 2-3 times in a day, and use the powder each time you vacuum. I would do this for at least a week, maybe more. My kitten came to me with fleas and that is exactly what I did.
The reason flea collars don't work is that the medicine in the collar doesn't soak into the system and therefore only kills the fleas that it actually comes in contact with. Frontline Plus soaks into the skin within minutes and starts killing all the fleas. In an hour all the live fleas have either died or jumped ship. The medicine stays on the skin for about a month, but remember that fleas can live longer than that. That is why you need to follow up with at least 2 more treatments. Frontline Plus also kills the eggs and it also kills ticks and their eggs as well. So this is great to use on dogs that go camping or hiking or hunting on a regular basis. GL

Yep and especially if your cat is indoors.
Fleas can live on the cat, and in carpeting and furniture.
Keep using flea treatment throughout the seasons, both on your cat and on the carpeting and furniture.

fleas can live as long as they have an animal they live on, regardless of weather. they strive on the animal blood and the fur actually keeps them warm.
