Good question! Christians tell others about Christ in hopes that the person will come to know Him and be saved from an eternity in Hell. Their motive is clear. What is the motive for an atheist to try to prove the Christian wrong? Isn't it just a waste of the atheist's time? If there is nothing after this life... what does it matter?
Thanks for asking this one!
God Bless,
Sue

Oh, please, RiverFrog! I've been researching this category, & find an ABUNDANCE of page after page & website after website, PREACHING that those of us who don't believe as YOU believe are going to hell in a handbasket. SINNERS REPENT! INHERIT THE KINGDOM! & so on. Why do want so desperately to change US? Why do we bother you? I have NEVER been critical of anyone's belief--no matter what it is. The few times I've seen nasty answers, (of course some exist! I'm not a moron), I've defended the asker simply on the principle that everyone has a RIGHT to their "belief." NH Baritone says it all. While Newbiegro is the definitive Atheist basher. What would be YOUR benefit in "proving us wrong?" Saving us from an eternity in hell. I couldn't help but laugh at: "If there is nothing after this life, what does it matter?" LIFE matters. It is sometimes difficult to comprehend how Christians yearn so for heaven, & fear hell, when so many joyous experiences are right here for us. I know Christians who are "nice" (reluctantly) only hoping for reward. I know one who would gladly chop off someone's hands if not afraid of punishment. Talk about hypocrisy! I leave others alone, I respect even when I disagree, & I am more than content with my life, & the person that I am. I couldn't care less about "changing" anyone.

Other people's beliefs don't bother me in the slightest. However, I will speak out whenever my position is misrepresented. You are doing that here, although it's a minor case compared to much of what goes on.
One of my motivations is to keep putting the correct information out there, to not let 'creationists' spread their absurdly mistaken versions of evolutionary theory, or insist that atheists couldn't possibly have read the Bible -- against repeated evidence and solely because the asker 'just can't imagine' that we actually have a clue what we're talking about.
I fully realise that the askers generally won't change their minds, but perhaps a reader will appreciate reading a different viewpoint.

There would be less ignorance in the world and more people would pay attention to the problems on this earth instead of longing to go onto the next life.
The promise of an after-life makes it easier for you to ignore what is going on around you. You see someone suffering in other countries and say 'May they find peace in heaven' I know because a relative of mine does it all the time.
It annoys me because she could easily sponsor a child, or try her hardest to help out in some way instead of praying to 'God' to help them out.
Also people wouldn't be so ignorant about things. Like homosexuality, the issues surrounding contraception and abortion, sex before marriage, celibacy...I am not bothered by the fact that people believe in God, believe yes, depend no. Faith can do incredible things, and psychological research shows that some people need faith, and they need that stability in their lives. I don't try and turn people from God, or against God. I believe in God.
Just not Christianity, or Judaism or Hinduism or any other religion as they are all flawed. Believe in God yes, but we need to start believing in each other as well or we will create hell on earth.

It bothers me because in my view people use this "belief" to abdicate responsibility for their own actions. They also use the bible to justify inhuman actions - even the KKK claim to be christians. That is illogical, for clearly they are not.
I don't have any motivation to prove them wrong, for if people are going to believe in myths and fantasy, there is not much you can do about it, generally speaking.
The benefit of people believing in reality would be a better world for all, no religious based wars and related deaths, no descrimination based on religion and so on.
I also agree with BookofStars answer - although that would never happen in my country, so it is not something I experience personally.
The Dude - if what you are quoting is true - I am HORRIFIED! We don't need to protect the environment because some mythical creature is going to save us all? This is coming from a senior government advisor? Lunacy, sheer lunacy!

Why hardship? as quickly as you settle for that the final public of religions are in simple terms bedtime memories to make human beings sleep at evening, or to maintain them behaving in a fashion which replaced into as quickly as the muse of an iron age society, you're then loose to study, examine and are available on your guy or woman conclusions. Atheism isn't a creed, or a fashion of existence. it incredibly is a individual's attractiveness that the international does not revolve around them...or their race or species. it incredibly is the terrific attractiveness that we come from airborne dirt and dust and to airborne dirt and dust we will return.

Most atheists are bothered by the imposition of the Christian way of life on everyone regardless of their beliefs. Unless you have been an atheist you can have no idea what it is like to live in a country ostensibly based on the notion of the separation of church and state only to find that 180 degrees from the truth. If you quietly refuse to participate in group prayers, you are persecuted. If you do not share in the slavish devotion to rituals and traditions in which you do not believe but do not want to interfere with those who do, you are not allowed to without some amount of fallout.

(I'm agnostic) It doesn't bother me at all that other people believe in god. I hope there is a god, and a heaven etc. It doesn't bother me if someone goes to church every Sunday, and they love it. What bothers me is that they hurl insults at others in a way that I guess they believe is subtle:
"Start to read the bible it explains lots!
I feel bad 4 people who do not know God! U probably miss out on lots in U'r life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..."
So many of them say how they feel sorry for people who don't believe as they do. They assume that everyone needs the same things as them in life, and we don't! We are all different. Even with our bodies - certain diets work for some people and don't work for others. Everyone is different, and just because religion is necessary in one person's life doesn't mean it is necessary in EVERYONE'S life.
Bender R. - obviously you didn't read most of the responses on here. Most non-religious folk don't want to jam their beliefs down others throats, they just don't want to be constantly criticized and judged by Christians. Seriously, that's all I'm asking. Enjoy your religion, but don't expect me to enjoy exactly what you do. I don't expect you to love 90's r&b do i? No.

I think the ones that argue the most, are looking for a reason to believe. When a customer goes into a store and asks questions by talking to the sales person.. about a product.. ones wrestles with questions like, whey should I buy this, or invest my money into this? The reasons why customers do this is because their looking for a reason to purchase the item. ( They only difference is the word of God is free)--but these people are skeptics, filled with doubt and disbelief.. some people, can only see with their eyes. .eyes are deceiving one should realize.( we cannot rely on our 5 senses alone)
Satan is the master of lies.. he influences people, to not believe, he wants them to argue and spread this message that there is no God...
People may be getting angry and angrier, because the word of God challenges the lies, and brings forth the truth...

It doesn`t bother me that you believe .
What bothers me is that you pass on religion through,
Guilt -- you aren`t anything if you don`t believe.
Judgment - God will send you to hell for not believing.
Punishment -You don`t get dessert if you don`t pray.
Lies -God is all powerful and lives
What is wrong,is that you do this to children ,to get them to believe .
My parents did not do this ,but Aunts and Uncles did this to their kids .
You are lying to them .You can`t produce god anymore than you can prove the Easter bunny exists .
I am not interested in spreading my way of thinking - That comes with maturity and intelligence .
