I have around £5000 to play with
was thinking re. jeep like a suzuki, not hardcore 4x4, just a soft top to fly around with in the summer, as i live in Devon(beach).
Dont do alot of 'interstate', never more than a few hours (300 miles) at a time.
Yeh i can fix stuff myself
I like the Mg midget idea, and spitfire and toyota camry. Any expansions on those?
Thinking MG ZR perhaps as well?
cheers

different AND interesting?
if you want that you've got to build it.
not so common and somewhat cool?
that is what you get if your a selective buyer. what do you need it for? example i live where there is snow and mud and rocks and trails i cannot own a 2 wheel drive. if you can you've got more options. do you ever drive interstate? lots of cool cars out there wouldn't be able to do 80 mph for more than a few miles. narrow it down a little more like where you go, do you NEED 4X4?
can you fix things yourself? do you make enough money to pay for gas but are a green tree hugging hippie who needs good mileage to sleep at night? some of that stuff would help

Few people actually try this but if you look for a car with a big engine designed to appeal to older people (Kia Magentis, Hyundai Sonata, Rover 800) you can get a car with huge power for a 19 year old, maybe not fit the fuel consumption as well as you'd like, but would be quite cheap to insure. I had a Rover 827 V6 Twin cam 24Valve Sterling at 18, my own insurance cost £615PA, that was 7 years ago now but I got a cousin into the same situation this year, got him a 1995 Toyota Camry 3.0 V6, he's 18 and is paying £775 a year insurance. In a straight line it makes any other 18year olds car look like a Golf cart, and does well in corners too as it's a well-built car. Of another note with the same insurance company his insurance for a Ford Fiesta 1.1 was £760.

How about a classic car? Triumph Sptifire maybe? MG Midget? I know they only do about 30mpg but you should save on insurance and you won't have to pay road tax.

They look and sound nicer than any newer car and far easier to fix if they go wrong, all you'll need is a set of imperial spanners and an imperial socket set, no fancy screwdrivers or strange looking spanners.

If you want something newer, Alfa Romeo 145/146, Fiat Bravo, Mazda 323 (the fastback one) or if you truley want to be different a Lada Riva or Niva. They may not be that different but the roads are not covered in them. For your first car though it seems too expensive to be different
