I have to do a report on a sect or cult, the only problem is I have to pick out the sect or cult that I'm going to do the report on! So if you could just give me a name of an existing controversial sect or cult I can do the rest! =D

Thanks.

In response to JOE K, “wicken” is NOT a Cult and its spelled Wicca or better known as Paganism. In response to cults in modern society today the best known one so far is Scientology which was founded by L. Ron Hubbard, but be careful when you use the word cult it’s more of a philosophy and now they have a Church called The Church of Scientology. If you want an idea for your report than do research on Alcoholics Anonymous, they use religious practices and dogma to cure Alcoholism, now this doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing but it’s a group formulated with a leader and it’s participants hand over their will to a higher power. Now if you are thinking cults like in the negative sense than go with the most famous cult in American history, THE FAMILY, ran by Charles Manson.

Most of the rest of the World's Christians consider American Fundementalism something of a "cult", that might make for an interesting report! "Fundementalism", or believe in scriptural innerrancy and that it is "literal truth" rather than guidance was invented in the US in the late 1800s as a reaction aginst the teaching of science in public schools. You only have to look around you to see the rest of the story!

Pat Robertson personally "heard from God" that a tsunami was going to hit the US coast this year because of our "wickedness". Since there are only a couple weeks left in 2006, either God lied (doubtful) or Robertson brand of Christianity is VERY cult-like!

Example of a cult:

as a "cult" directly in North American English, a "sect" in British English or any equivalent foreign language word;
as a group in that organizations and sets of individual practitioners, including those named by their technical practice of cults, qualify as groups;
as such within the last 50 years;
as named by reliable sources to have not existed independently prior to 1920 in its substantially present form of beliefs and earthly practices;
as not qualifying as a personality cult (heads of state), fancult of popular culture, or group that doesn't have an actual following (fictional or self-nominated groups).

Now follow this link it gives a HUGE list of groups considered cults and TONS of info you can link from.

Try the Masons, that never gets old. Also, Order of the Golden Dawn. The feller (Aleister Crowley) that founded that group was peculiar, you will have fun looking him up.

Paulists.

They think of them selves as Christians, yet the path that they follow is a judgmental perversion of the teachings of Jesus.
