What do you think of Carmax for buy a used car? There slogan is "The way car buying should be." I went and test-drove a car today. There is less pressure to buy from their salespeople than going to a regular car lot. Yet, I still got the feeling that they so try and steer you into buying. They do want you to buy right after the test drive. Overall, dealing with them was positive, but I was surprised that their offer to buy my used car I felt was about $1000 less than the Kelly Blue Book value (hmmm..no sales tactics?).

It depends what you are looking for. Carmax generally has some very nice inventory - their vehicles have been inspected and reconditioned. They also will not sell vehicles that have been wrecked or have evidence of frame or flood damage.

On the other hand, Carmax prices tend to be higher than you might find elsewhere - especially if you are looking at buying a car from a private owner. Carmax sales associates also are incented to sell you a warranty with the vehicle. This warranty is almost pure profit for Carmax (not that it is necessarily a bad idea to buy one).

Overall, Carmax is a comfortable place to buy a vehicle if you are intimidated by or unfamiliar with the car buying process. The downside is you will pay a premium for this comfort level. My advice: use Carmax for comparison shopping and then try to purchase a similar vehicle from a private owner using autotrader or ebay.

Check out www.edmunds.com and make sure to accurately describe the condition, almost no consumer owned car falls into the excellent category. Most are average with the best of them in the clean category. As far as Carmax goes, they aren't really any different than any other car lot. They will still try to get you to buy a car, that is why both of you are there(You need a car, they have cars for sale). However no matter where you go to purchase a car, make sure to do your research online first. Try using www.edmunds.com to research different makes and models, and to check pricing. In the end no matter what, make sure that you get a carfax, they are not error-proof but they are better than nothing and most reputable dealerships provide them for free. Lastly no matter what you do, DO NOT buy a car the first time you go to a dealership, always go home to think it over first, if only for a couple of hours. Then come back and offer 1000-1500 lower than your previous price, because the worst that can happen is that they will say no. Most people pay too much for a car because they are too afraid to ask for a discount. You should at minimum make the salesperson lower the price 3 or 4 times. I know this is a long answer but I have been working as a car salesman for the last four years and I just wanted to share an insiders tips on how to get the best deal. Feel free to email me with any additional questions and I would be glad to help!

Depending on your vehicle and the condition, CarMax will either put it on the lot or sell it another dealer in an auction. You are getting "Wholesale" value on your car from CarMax, but you're also getting it from any other dealership you might take the vehicle. Another dealership might seem to offer you more, but the money doesn't just disappear. I like CarMax because they're straight forward and don't hide the value in some number game based on the car you're buying from them or how many other car's you've bought. The buyers at both dealerships know the value of your car because they spend a good portion of their lives buying cars everyday. The only difference is CarMax will right you a check that day, a traditional dealership won't.

My dad was pissed about the 750 bucks that came back on our '98 Contour SVT, he took it over to the local Ford dealership and they told him they'd give him 1500 dollars for it in trade. We ended up buying an '04 Camry XLE they had on the lot. The price was a bit high, and since he hadn't ever bought from them before, difficult to negotiate. CarMax was offering a very similar camry at roughly a grand cheaper. The reality is that at the end of the day someone's going to make money and if it weren't the dealerships, we wouldn't have a place to buy our cars.
