It needs to be read in the context of the other beatitudes. Jesus is contrasting this these attitudes with the general feeling in the world that thinks you are "blessed" or "happy" if you are proud, a winner, and everyone approves of you.
He knwe if you really live whole heartedly for God, you will have opposition. Paul said that all those who live piously will be persecuted.
In Galatians 1, he stated that if his goal was the approval of men, then he was not a servant of God.
The kingdom of Heaven means the state in which Heaven is ruling on earth. A person who lives according to the beatitudes is actually living in the kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus also said there, Blessed are you when men shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. This blessing is what keeps many Christians professing the love of Jesus to the world. We believe that Jesus will do just what He says. The first biblical account that comes to mind is Stephen in the book of Acts. He was stoned but accounted to his friends that he was seeing Jesus at the right hand of Father God beckoning him. There are many modern day accounts but my favorite is an account by an India pastor who last year lost one of his children because he refused to deny Jesus and is now the pastor of a new church in his village and most of his neighbors are members. He is not able to tell anyone where the money came from to help the village and build the church but he was a good steward and helped the people who had killed his child. That is a Christian.

It goes along with "Rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed" 1 Peter 4:13
-Those who stand strong in their faith and are not shaken- continuing to proclaim the truth of God- even while being persecuted, whether it be physical or even verbally- they will be blessed in the end. Those who endure till the end...How much JOY they will have when they enter Heaven and See the Lord coming--knowing theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
Mark 13:13
And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

the NIV says 'those who are persecuted because of righteousness.' this verse, jesus states that those who are treated unfairly, persecuted, and suffer because they have decided to remain faithful to Christ, Jesus says that those people are held in high honor by God, and will enter the kingdom of heaven

Paul suffered lashing, beatings, drowning, stonings, and still preached! The people of China, who have to worship God underground, know that if they're discovered, there lives would lay in the balance.
