Im interested in Buddhism and last week I bought a happy Buddha statue. Since we have had it in the house though things keep going wrong. I think it is just coincidence myself, as im not supersticious, although my girlfriend is.
She is now worrying because she heard they can bring bad luck. Is this true?
Now we are arguing because she wants it off the display shelf and out of the house :( and i want to keep it.

Yes im Atheist Mary but i am interested in the Buddha"s teachings. I have been studying a bit on internet sites. I think it has just been a bad week anyway and nothing to do with the statue.

You know the answer already! It is just conincidence! If bad things are happening to you,my advice is to keep a low profile for the time being and also do more wholesome deeds such as meditation, reading dhamma books, associating with wise people, visit Buddhist temple and offer food and requisite to the monks.
May you be well and happy.

I've heard of all sorts of superstitions and folk beliefs from all over the world, and I've never heard of this one. However, here's an explanation for why things are going wrong a lot now that you've brought in a statue that your gf objects to.
Whatever we pay attention to, increases. Whatever we disregard, decreases. This is part of the cosmic law of attractions. So your girlfriend, convinced that the statue has brought bad luck, pays more attention to bad things happening, and calls your attention to them as well. This increaase in attention in turn brings about an increase in bad things happening, and so the cycle feeds on itself.
In other words, it's not bad luck to have a buddha statue in the house, but it is bad luck to worry about bad luck and to argue with your girlfriend and she with you. Another thing -- if she's Christian or Jewish, even a lapsed Christian or Jew, she may be afraid of the second commandment against making images for the purpose of worship, and this complex translates into a fear of bad luck. I once knew a lady who had some beautiful museum quality tapestries of the Buddha in her house, then when she became a Christian she feared that they were devil worship, and destroyed them. When it was suggested that she give them away rather than destroy them, she refused to do this, because she felt that they were evil and should be destroyed lest they bring evil to anyone else. I think some people give way too much power to the devil by thinking like this.
At any rate,. it sounds like you two have some serious control issues to work out, that go beyond what kind of artwork to bring in the house. So take it from there. Good luck!

Well, I'm not particularly superstitious myself, but God knows if I say something I don't want to happen, I knock on wood. Perhaps you should read up on Buddhism, it actually is a lovely religion as they believe in wisdom & do not consider their religion an exclusive club, but rather an inclusive one to understand & find deeper meanings in life. Life is so amazing, I bet if you look into it, you will like what you see, and perhaps it will aid in your "luck", but just so you know, they do believe in a "God", as you sound atheist.
Here's a buddhist verse to get you started:
"Let go the past, let go the future, and let go what is in between, transcending the things of time. WIth your mind free in very direction, you will not return to birth & aging."

Actually no. I had a goth friend who had absolutely no connections to Buddhism and she owned a Buddha statue for years.

Simply put no.
Not just because I don't hold with superstition, but because there's no recorded instances of this anyway. I don't know where your gf got her information from. Pure coincidence.
