I've heard there is some good linoleum on the market today. Can it compare to laminate? (I think tile would be out of my price range)

i have laminate flooring in my kitchen and i have had the occasionaly spills on the floor and while i have yet to see this swelling that people are talking about, it is an issue when it gets wet in that it becomes very, very slippery much more so than linoleum or hardwood. so, if this is a concern to you then, you should go for the linoleum. i also want to add that we've had this flooring for 8 years and we have no such "swelling between the seams" anywhere. i would think that laminate flooring wouldn't be so popular if it was so easily damaged like this and besides, spills can happen anywhere in a home, not only the kitchen. the "slippery" thing can get annoying because we have 2 toddlers in the house but otherwise laminate looks beautiful for the price and if you are looking to resell your home, laminate looks and sounds more appealing to potential buyers! good luck!

I've never had laminate floors but a friend spent several thousand dollars for it and then had a dishwasher leak and ruin it. Water damage is a high probability in a kitchen. Linoleum is far less expensive and very durable. There are great floor coverings that look like tile, slate, brick and many other surfaces with much easier maintenance. Ask friends and family for a reliable floor covering store. The sales people can give you a cost, maintenance and durability comparison.

Ceramic Tile..,....Laminate will not last long if it gets wet a lot, and linoleum just looks cheep and will last about 5 years. A properly installed ceramic floor will last on average 30 to 50 years.

Most laminate flooring is not made to deal with moisture. Kitchens, baths and laundry rooms are poor places for laminate. The substrate will swell, flake, and come apart if exposed to water.

Consider ceramic tile, solid wood or a vinyl.

We have unsealed hardwood in our kitchen and hallway and when my husband and I buy these duplexes from my in-laws I want to replace them with the laminate. It is easier to clean. Linoleum has little indentations in it that can hold dirt and make it look dull faster, and if there is a water leak it may make it curl up. I love the look of wood floors in a house.

Laminate is the better choice if you can afford it. Linoleum is much less durable, but also less expensive.

laminate, we have that in our kitchen and it is better than any linoleum i've every seen. beets vinyl, too. it is stout, scratch resistant, easy to sweep and mop and keep clean, and i've dragged atleast two stoves and one refrigerator acorss it and it is still a beautiful floor (any thing else would have scratched and scarred, i am such a caveman when it comes to getting things in the house for my lovely wife)

i wouldn't use laminate or any kind of wood floor in a kitchen, too much chance of it getting wet. laminates usually have a hardboard backing which will swell when it gets wet, and you will see ridges where the seams are.
