Most original Topping is Mozzarella cheese, most unusual is Pine nuts, when I lived in California, alot of pizza joints would have pine nuts as a topping, and it was sooo delicious. Can't find that in Iowa.

Most common= cheese, then pepperoni
Most unusual= pineapple, or anchovy
May I suggest that you call, interview a local pizzaria, especially one that is NOT a chain, like Dominoes or Pizza Hut, and ask?
I gave a report on the very same thing, back in a Business Communications class in college, and as part of my research, I contacted a Pizzaria owner, a private one, and the guy was more than happy to assist me. Even to the point of delivering several Pizza Pies to the class, at a 'pre-determined' time, to coincide with the ending of my report.
((Thanks again, Orin!!))
The report was an absolute HIT!! And I got an A.
Good Luck to You!

Here's some links to history of pizza:
"The first known pizza shop was the Port 'Alba in Naples, which opened in 1830 and is still open today. The first pizzeria in North America was opened in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi at 53 1/3 Spring Street in New York City." http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blpizza.htm
History and Legends of Pizza, Pizza History, Tomato Pie History.

Hope that helps!
PS What a funny school essay topic lol

Probably the most common topping is tomato sauce, or tomatoes. Second to that is cheese.
Most unusual: Gosh, it could be any weird thing you want to throw on there...
