I was watching Nightline last night, and they showed how similiar and different, dog, elephant,a nd dolphin pregnancies are. They also showed two dogs sticking their butts together, legs crossed together. Was this mating?

LOL, yes. Dogs don't always move into that position after a tie, but it is normally done. If someone is using one of my stud's, I will guide his body down and flip his one hind leg over her so they are more comfortable. I have seen my one male still in a mounting position after a tie with one of my bitches.

When dogs mate the base of the males penis enlarges due to a gland called the bulbus glandis. This traps the penis in the vagina for anywhere between 10-60 minutes. It is called the "tie". Most males when done with mating will swing a leg over the female and be in that butt to butt position that you saw. So pretty much what you saw was not the actual act of mating, but the doggy equivalent of smoking a cigarette after.

The male dog will initially mount the female dog and after semen is deposited into her reproductive tract his penis stays engorged and inside of her. This is commonly known as "tieing up." People often think something has gone wrong since the dog and b-tch are now rear to rear. This is to insure that the semen says in the female and enough gets to her uterine horns to make a zygote (sperm and egg together). Other species have different ways of doing this. In pigs the boar deposits a sticky substance that acts like glue to seal the cervix and vagina so that the semen says inside of her. It has been shown scientifically that reproductive success is significantly higher when these "plugs" are used. So I guess Mother Nature knows what's she's doing.

Yes, when the male prepares to ejaculate his penis swells. This is how dogs get "locked" together. It takes some time for it to return to normal. The male dismounts and they end up butt to butt. This is the end of the mating process. Oh and it depends on the part of the country you come from . Around here it is called locking and others call it tying.

Sure, due to the fact that puppies do not know they are related. They simply go by their traditional instinct-- to reproduce, and avert extinction-- therefor, if there's a b*tch in heat, they're going to mate. @artist: it's particularly not gross... Dogs aren't people, so they do not know their loved ones. And it does not normally intent well being problems, however sure, it has a risk of doing so. Linebreeding is healthier than inbreeding.

It definitely sounds like it. After mating, dogs stay "locked" together in the position you describe for some time. This happens because there is a bone in the penis of dogs (no, it's not a bad joke). I don't know what purpose it serves, but I have seen it with shelties.

sure, because of the fact dogs do not understand they are appropriate. they only pass by using their organic instinct-- to reproduce, and circumvent extinction-- therefor, if there's a b*tch in warmth, they'll mate. @artist: that is rather not gross... dogs are not human beings, so as that they don't understand their relatives. And it does not consistently reason well-being matters, yet sure, it has achievable of doing so. Linebreeding is greater helpful than inbreeding.
