The fork goes on the left side of the plate. If you are serving salad or some other appetizer that requires a salad fork it goes to the left of the dinner fork. On the right side of the plate place the butter knife and then the spoon. Coffee cups go above the knife and spoon and water glasses go to the left of the coffee cup.. If you are using linen napkins do a search engine for ideas on how to fold them and you can place them in the middle of the dinner plate.

Forks into the back of host’s left fist, spoon in the mouth (reduces screaming).
Coffee cup under water glass (to keep coffee warm), knife in host’s right hand, hostess on guest’s lap etc
