All religions began as cults.
What is the difference, after all, between a cult and a religion? Cults that last, that grow, that gain enough wealth and power become, at some point (like magic) a *religion* and its status as a cult is shaken off like water on a dog after a swim in the river.
There are many religions through time that have allowed polygamy. There are some that allow it now, in today's world--and the hot spots in North America (border of Utah and Arizona, Canadian outpost and a new home for them being built in Texas, as we speak) are not alone in sheltering polygamists.
In the U.S., these people believe that their main prophet insisted god said one could not get to heaven without multiple wives and zillions of children. "Modern" Mormons put an end to the practice as a condition of statehood--however, the need for this practice was *never* erased from their religious tracts.
The offshoots of Mormonism who practice polygamy today, therefore, do so in accordance with the original (and still a part of the religion) requirement for those of that faith.
Finally, if one grows up in an atmosphere where multiple wives is the norm--even blood sisters sharing a husband--then that is going to be what's right and good. Anything else is just wrong. And we cannot discount the fact that these people grow up in very isolated communities and may never all of their childhood encounter anyone who is not of their faith. They are taught to be wary, even paranoid, of outsiders.
Why would it be odd, then, that their practices are decidedly different then what we choose?
And yes, it's a cult.

I think this question is meant for comments rather than answers, since there is no question.
I'll comment on what Pangel said. In reality, everybody isn't happy. Some of the men might be happy. The women, mostly, are not happy (I'm not referring to Muslim women, but those who are in a situation of multiple wives).
On the other hand, I was not aware they could have as many as 10 wives. I knew they could get them pretty young, and that it is often a financial transaction, in which the woman doesn't have much to say, but I thought there was a limit to the number of wives. I may be confusing the situation with the Mormons. I know they were limited to 4.
EDIT:
Looking over the answers, I'm wondering if I got this all wrong and you were referring to one of the Mormon sects. If that is the case, and it is true they allow up to 110 wives, then it must have been the mauslims that only allowed 4! However perhaps you could set me straight by adding a detail to your question.

If you look up the definition of cult you will find that haveing more than one wife would not fit.
Everybody seems to blame the Mormons for starting the ideal of more than one wife but they didn't. It has gone on all through the ages. Look in the Bible, there are many references to prophets and others having more than one wife.
Just like Havingfun said look at the Arab or Muslim world they have had Polygomy all through time including modern times.
Now to JimB's response-there are NO fundamentalist Mormons, they are either Mormon or they are NOT.
MrEd--Like I explained to JimB there are no fundamentalist Mormons there are also NO Mormon Sects-either they are Mormon or they are NOT. Also the only limit that was put on it at the time was WHAT A MAN COULD PROPERLY CARE FOR.
I can also state that when Polygomy was approved for the LDS members NOT ALL were allowed to have multiple wives. Again only the ones that could PROPERLY CARE FOR THEM. It was instituted for the reason that the women out numbered the men due to so many men dying or being killed and had no way to be able to support themselves or their kids. It was also done away with in 1892 and any member that practiced it after that time and refused to stop was EXCOMMUNICATED from the church.
If you do your research you will find that most of the members of those polygomist groups have NEVER been members or have been EXCOMMUNICATED.

Can I please clarify this misconception about the Mormon religion that so many people here have.
Official church policy is that any member found practicing polygamy is excommunicated (which is the harshest punishment the church can give). Yes, it was practiced over a 100 years ago, and then the Prophet Wilfred Woodruff declared he had received a revelation from God that all practice of it must stop - and all faithful members did immediately stop.
There are these random fringe groups that claim to Mormon that are giving the real Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints very bad press, but they are not. People like that have been excommunicated from membership for over a hundred years.
Thanks for letting me straighten that out.

I didnt watch any documentary on this recently... but i do know about it... in some arabian countries, some sheikhs have a harem and they have many wives. they do not have enough rights (women do not have any rights in arab world i think) to mind it or have a say in this. i think they are kind of bought and placed into the harem. their lives are no better than the slaves. they just wait for their turn when the husband would feel like doing them... and submit when ever he feels like it... SAD world...

Why do you think that polygamy means it is a cult? There has been lots of polygamy throughout the ages.

were you lived with them to see how their life is? one man can NOT handel all these women, so it's not like all of them get "doinking" as you describe. they may just like the way it is. what you think is wrong, to other culture it's fine.
