for leisure trail type riding- American quarter horse. Another tough type of horse would be a heavy warmblood(irish draft-type) bomb proof and tough as nails. I wouldnt suggest any type of hotter blooded horse such as a thoroughbred, they are too fine and fragile for rough terrine. For show jumping (cross country?I would just look for larger, nicely balanced , shorter backed types with a thicker leg and larger pasterns and hooves.Believe or not I owned an irish warmblood who had the largest hooves ive ever seen(like a Clydsdale) She could jump better than any horse ive ever owned-so, I would suggest looking around and have the horse looked at by a vet before your purchase.

My two best trail horses are my 8 year old QH and my 23 year old Russian Arab. The Arabs are hardy, extremely obedient, and need less water. The typical Arab loves a trail ride. The quarter horses are built well for it and enjoy it. Another good breed is the Rocky Mountain Horse; I have heard they are excellent horses for this purpose.

For really rough going, I believe I'd go for the quarter horse. He's got a lot of muscle, is tough as nails, and closer to the ground than some like the thoroughbred.
Being not as tall as some makes it easier to get in the saddle, and easier to pass under low limbs in the woods.

If you really want to be hacking it cross country you've got to pay close attention to a quarter horses feet. They have many hoof problems that wouldn't make them the best buy. Arabians, mules and Icelandic horses come in tops in hard races for a reason.

Arabs are tought little horses with lots of go. They do very well in endurance races and long distance things.
Also Appaloosas are very good at distance. They have a 100 mile race for Appys only. It is called The Chief Joseph race. It is only open to Appys.
