If he was neutered early, then he would not be doing the "mark my turf" thing.
As for lifting his leg, that is a learned behavior. It isn't necessary for his to do so. My 2 yr old lives with me and 2 female dogs. He has not lifted his leg either. If it bothers you, take his to where he can see other males. I don't care that mine doesn't lift his leg and the bushes along the fence are happy that he doesn't.

Its more common than you think. If the dog was nutered at a young age its most likly that he will never learn. Sometimes its just personal preference of the dog. I used to have a lab a long while back that wouldnt lift its leg and it bothered me so much that whenever he went out side do do his business I would keep him on a leash, when he went to do it I would lift his leg for him. Two weeks of hard work and he finally got the point!

Is he neutered? That makes all the difference. My male Sheltie (3 yrs old) dog never lifts his leg. He squats like a little girl dog.
ps - I think people that rescue dogs are wonderful. Thank you. All my dogs have been rescues and my cats too.

First things first. All males regardless of species are lazy! forget dominance, neutering, rescue, cross all the usual excuses. Shepperd's are very intelligent dogs but don't pick everything up first time round. mine squatted until he was four and still does every now and then, he also wee's on his own legs! Again, bloke thing! He will work it out eventually, if your worried try walking him with other male dogs, it can help as behaviour breeds behaviour.

It has nothing to do with neutering, who he grew up with, or what breed he is:
A dog lifts his leg because of his status. If he is raised with females, he is more likley to feel more dominate, and will lift his legs. If he is raised with a larger, older dog, he is more likely to keep squatting as his way. Sometimes, a female may feel more dominate, and will lift her leg! I think both are same status to
each other and have no need to be protective of any terrirtory.
Happy Holidays! :-D

Well the answers really simple..
your poor fella doesnt have ,..well the leadership traits..
dogs that do have a higher position in a pack..stand really erect and piss with real elegance(lifting their hind leg) ..
your dog is not one of the leaders of the pack, and might have been bullied as a pup (by his siblings)
You mentioned a rescue ?? ~was he in a brawl ??!

Is he fixed? Our husky is over two years old and only on a rare occasion does he his lift his leg. I was told by the vet this was because we fixed him young, which tends to slow down their maturity rate. He will eventually do it, but for now he's sorta still like a pup.

Hey, he may one day lift his leg. It's normal. I have seen dogs that went three yrs before lifting a leg, especially if they are neutered as puppies. No biggie.

I have a female dog that lifts her leg... She was in a foster home with 4 male dogs when we adopted her. (Looks funny, though.)
Don't worry about it. It's his preference. (Some men pee sitting down, too... SHOCKER!)
