For Balance and for wagging to let other dogs know its intentions are not hostile.. Also same applies when it wags at its master..

It's for balance. Ever seen a dog fall over? Actually I think I may have done. I can imagine it. But i think it was off a bed or a sofa or something. So yeah, balance (while standing).

Wow, my Dane was born with a long tail, and when it whips you in the face because he is so happy to see you, you know that it hurts and you know not to get mad just realize that it is an expression of his affection for you. Kinda hard to realize when it really smarts and makes your eyes water.

Because it can't talk. The tail communicates its needs and emotions.

logically dogs have a tail - "to wag it and express their joy, happiness, etc"

scientifically - "its an evolutionary thing..to make them look bigger..and their grandpapa's passd it down to them..and well they couldnt refuse it....."

so dogs have a tail.....!
