Is a female dog fertile for the whole 21 days, or only for a part of the time?

Females go into heat about every 6 months. and the heat lasts for 21days.

The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.

The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.

Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter

. Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.

While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

in season for upto 24 days depending on the dog NOT the breed. Most females are most likely to receive studs at somewhere between 9-14 days. This is when they become a "hunter" as well. you'll be amazed at what some females will do to find a partner at this time. I've heard stories and even seen a couple jump over a 6ft fence because there was a male dog on the other side. I've also seen some females rip the fencing off a fence so that they can go wandering around.

If you noticed spotting on the 28th count forward about 10 to 12 days and that will bring her to her most receptive time for breeding. This is the time when the discharge turns straw color and she swells quite a bit. Her entire heat cycle last 28 days with her being receptive to the male from about the 10th day on to the end of her cycle. I had one female dog wait until almost the last day before she bred so if you don't want puppies (which there are way to many unwanted puppies) keep her away from the males and consider getting both dogs fixed. It is far more healthier for both animals if they are neutered. Your female dog is giving off a very strong scent at this time and she will attract all un-neutered male dogs in your area and sometimes beyond.

Female dogs don't have periods, but they do go into heat every 6 months and yes they bleed. Some it's hardly noticable others to make a terrible mess. Unspayed females do bring lots of problems apart from just the bleeding though if they are not spayed. You will have dogs barking and howling outside of your home for 3 weeks whenever she is in heat as well as doing anything they can to get to her. She will also try to get to them. Having her spayed takes away all of those worries. It also removes the chance of her contracting several cancers layer in life or getting pyometra which is a uterine infection which is fatal if left untreated or not treated soon enough.

part of the time. from the 7th or so day she is in until about the 13th. Dogs vary being fertile from the 4th day-17th. But 7-13 is average.
She will only breed when she is ready. Your vet can also do a smear test to tell as well.
