i'm buying for a 16 year old, i dont have much money, he's a country boy but likes going out to socialise and drink etc

nothing too fresh or that stings your nose, sommat quite musty and deep, more like an aroma rather than a "caaw, too much aftershave buddy" type thing, so not too strong

any suggestions??

I work with fragrance companies as a job so know quite a bit about them.
Stay away from Joop cause it's one of those aftershaves that mixes with sweat, yuck!
Fahrenheit by Dior is a nice woody fragrance.
Very Irresistible Givenchy for men
Habit Rouge by Guerlain
Calvin Klein Eternity
Hugo Boss Crave
Bvlgari pour homme or Bvlgari Black
Chanel Allure
Ralph Lauren Polo Sport

Get him off to a better start than most by buying miessence aftershave balm. It's not too expensive - less than designer chemical based sprays and splash on (a little more than the cheapo-end of the market that are horrible anyway). It smells great and not overpowering...and best of all it is certified organic! Only made with 100% natural and organic ingredients (and no alcohol)

Brilliant, unique and better than anything else on the market all round - as it has none of the potentially harmful synthetic chemicals or fragrance the typical off-the-shelf brands have...(only all natural fragrance from natural oils)

You can see a full breakdown of the ingredients online if you are interested (source) - follow the shop link and try html version of shop if you are not on broadband - you do not have to sign up or buy anything to see all details - I think this Aftershave is unique in the world (and yes I do use it).

Dont whatever you do get him Zenga. It stinks and when you sweat it smells like very bad BO. dont even get him the Issey stuff either, its just as bad. Try one of the Burberry Aftershaves or if you have a local Bodycare Shop go in there and get the Paul Smith London or Hugo "Boss in Motion". they are cheaper in there and smell lovely!! Good Luck

My husband really likes the nivea extra soothing balm (he has sensitive skin) and the price is right!
But it really hasn't got much of a smell to it.
If you are looking for musty go with old spice.
Hope this helped!
