I don't know about the "nerve spot" idea, since my boxer must have half a dozen nerve spots that change location daily.
I think it's because the dog's motor cortex is connected to scratching and itching. When you scratch his itch, his brain gets a little confused and starts scratching for you, as though it decides his leg must have been scratching, therefore it should scratch. That's my theory.
I typically scratch him all over until I work all the itches out. If he keeps coming back for it, he likes it.

Dogs have a nerve there, when you scratch them there the nerve reacts and the leg moves. I try to avoid that spot it can hurt after awhile and make things uncomfortable for them...

actually its a itchy spot where they cant reach with their back leg so when u scratch it for them they feel to need to mimic the scratching motion

They always use their back legs to scratch anyway so thats just a reaction to your scratching. =)
