IF they were christian, then they were cultural christians and not well read in the Bible. Many thought the Bible supported being slave owners, many were using it as an excuse to do horrible things. The Bible is clear, "man stealing" as slavery is called in the bible is a sin, and a punishable offense. The verses I imagine, that slave owners used to support their owning slaves were in far different circumstances than how they lived. The slavery mentioned in the bible was more of a bondservant situation, and only for 7 years and they had rights. The "slave owner" had responsibilities. It is similar to someone buying a huge dinner at a restaurant, upon finishing, realizing he forgot his wallet and so he washes dishes to pay the debt. Slavery in the bible was similar to this. It did not give the restaurant owner the right to "own" the dishwasher. Nor did it give him the right to beat the "slave". And he was free to go upon the payment of the money owed.
Slavery like we saw before the civil war, was called "man stealing" and is a punishable crime. Had the "slave owners" in America really read scripture it would have told them they were dong a horrible thing.

All civilizations have had slaves. Some countries still do put people into slavery. It has nothing to do with church. All people need to learn to respect all people. That is at the bottom of all the trouble now. When everyone learns to live together as equals we just might have peace on earth. Respect works both ways.

Some of the people who owned slaves believed they were Christians. It is also important to remember that Christian Churches were heavily involved in the Abolitionist Movement, and did much to end slavery. Christian churches were also involved with the Civil rights Movement.
Yes, there was slavery in the bible, but God didn't invent or condone it. He acknowledged that it existed, and commanded that the slaves be freed every seven years. He didn't want anyone to be a slave to another for their entire life. It was He who first proposed the idea that slavery was wrong.

Different times bring up different ideas of morality and divinity. The people in the bible with slaves, did they go to hell? Did the slaves who killed their masters go to hell (or did two negatives make a positive) Do people who fight and kill in a war go to heaven? or to hell? or do they reside in purgatory? Don't forget that the vast majority of people who owned slaves thought that they (the slaves) were less than humans. If you have a horse working in your fields, or running around a track, do you expect to get into heaven? I would think so.

My ancestors, in the South, had slaves. They were very strong Christians, the church being very important to them.
Of course, they expected to go to heaven. They felt all
Christians went to heaven.
They'd ''roll over in their graves'' knowing I had converted to Judaism. They never even stopped to consider there might be something besides the Methodist and Baptist churches.

Some of them were, and yes, many of them did expect to get into heaven.
I'm not going to say that slavery is right (because I don't believe it is), but I don't know how God would judge those who owned slaves. Maybe they are in heaven. We just don't know.

From what we understand they were mostly church attending people and they did believe they were going to heaven - to many of them they felt they were doing god's work on this planet because they were bringing the gospel of good to their slaves that many of them believed would not have gotten it if it had not been for them!!!

If you study your history of slavery, you will see. The black man, In Africa, apprx. 400 yrs. ago, gave the white man the Impression that the slaves, black man sold to white man, were 2nd grade people, because most were former prisoners ect. Of course every one Is equel, but mabe these facts will help answer your question.

not all white people in the south who owned slaves were believers in god.
whether you go to heaven or not does not depend on what you own or do not own, it depends on your personal belief in God.
and many of the slave owners were very good to their slaves,
you might want to look at the way George Washington treated his.
