Our beagle dog lives like a person inside our home as a family member, she obediently goes outside for the bathroom through her ***** door. She was home alone with our young poodle puppy this week and when we came home, the beagle seems to have injured her back legs, she winces when we try to pick her up, she cannot jump onto the bed or couch as she usually does. It seems to be worsening each day. Our family is low on extra money for vet, so we were observing for a few days and do plan on taking her to the vet on Monday, meantime are there any chronic beagle issues with the back legs? There are no visible wounds, the pain seems to transfer daily from one back leg to the other. When I carefully feel each of her legs there appear to be no known area of pain nor any swollen parts. She only cries out if we try to help her get up onto something. She occasionally limps but does favor one back leg then the other. Can we give her motrin or aspirin or something until monday?

I DID NOT AND WOULD NOT EVER leave my precious pups alone for a week, someone in the answers said that and mis-read my question.

She has hurt her back. A disc is inflammed and gives her pain when jumping, going up steps, or being lifted. Give her asprin (one reg asprin per 40# with food every 6-8 hrs) and confine her until Monday. If she is not better a vet will probably have to give her a cortisone shot. Hope this helps....good luck.

Let me guess your dog is a little overweight an adult dog. It is probably experiencing arthritis in its back causing pain and numbness in the back legs . Do not put the dog on anything high up !!!! She will have to jump down from wherever, and will further hurt her. Try a product from a company called nature's vet called arthrisoothe, it is a miracle drug for arthritis inflammation ect. or any thing with gloucosamine. This stuff made my paralyzed dog walk again. Also she will probably need a shot of cortizone for future comfort.. Hope this helps

Beagle Back Problems

Most likely she was playing with the other dog and probabaly hurt her back. Smaller dogs that get up on furniture tend to have problems like you described if they jumped off and landed wrong. Until you get her to the vet, confine her. Strictly confine her no putting her on the bed or couch where she can fall or jump off and make her back worse, if thats whats wrong. Try to keep her from running and jumping as much as possible. I know that it is hard with some dogs but back injuries are no fun for anyone if they dont heal properly. Definitely take her to the vet but dont be surprised if they want to xray her or do bloodwork (like that one reader said it could also be liver or kidney problems too) I hope she gets well soon.

When I was a little girl, we had a beagle dog who had a slipped disk in his spine that made him suddenly drag his back paws. years later he had another slipped disk, this time higher up the spine which made it hard for him to raise his head.

Although beagles are prone to get slipped disks, the good news is that it's easily treatable by the vet. I don't know what's involved, but neither condition lasted very long.

Take your dog to the vet soon. Good luck!

Poor lil thing! We have a rescued beagle who has arthritis and a tendency to slip his kneecaps out of place and such. When it's acting up, he behaves a lot like what you're describing. We keep dogbeds in rooms with hard floors so that he's warm and we don't encourage him to jump on and off things if he seems hesitant. We haven't had to resort to medication yet. I hope your beagle isn't seriously injured and I hope you'll update this!

sounds like her back is out. before you give her people meds, call the vet and ask about that. even if it's the 24-hr vet, they can tell you if motrin or aspirin would be safe for her, and what amount based on her weight and age would be safe. i would crate her as much as possible until her vet appt, to help her avoid moving around too much. put something soft and snuggly in there so she'll be comfy laying on it. if you don't have a crate, find a box big enough that she cannot get out. you can find those at stores, etc. a 24-hr store is best, as they always are unloading stock. when she is out of the crate/box, lift her rather than letting her try to get up or down from something. lift her from underneath using both hands, and try to keep her whole back as straight as possible when you do that.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7Uq

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Mortgage the house, sell your soul, whatever. You have a responsibility to your dogs to give them the care they need. If you have 4 dogs, why not keep savings aside for this sort of emergency, or insure them. The vet trip is necessary - you shouldn't even have to think twice about it, let alone waste time posting questions on a website that you cannot hope to get a definite, accurate answer from. Aren't your dogs worth more to you than that? I really hope you get them sorted out now, and I hope they will be OK.

Since this was an obvious sudden injury and she is worsening I am glad she will be seeing her Vet on Monday. Call your Vet or a Vet at a weekend clinic if your Vet is out of pocket, and ask her or him what you can give her for pain since you will be taking your dog to your Vet on Monday.
