I'm currently dealing with an awfully painful sinus infection and the meds I'm on haven't really kicked in yet. 800 mg of Ibuprofen works well for the pain temporarily, but it's wearing off 3-4 hours before it would be safe for me to take more. Is there anything else I can try?

I should also add that my doc put me on an antibiotic and a prescribed decongestant/expectorant, so I don't know if I should try other stuff like Sudafed or a nasal spray.

Don't use Sudafed if you're already taking a prescription decongestant. Try taking a hot shower or using a humidifier.

I have had recurring sinus infections since I was a baby, so I feel your pain. I have two solutions for you:
1. Irrigate your sinuses. Mix 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, and about 2 cups lukewarm water. Can't be too hot or it will burn, too cold and the stuff won't mix. Use a baby aspirator to suck the mixture up, lean over the side of a sink, and squirt it up into your nose. Suck it back a little, but don't let it go down your throat. Keeping your head leaned over will help. Have a washcloth ready, then blow it out. The most disgusting stuff you've ever seen will come out. I gagged the whole time I did it the first time because it was so disgusting, but I got used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore. Keep doing it until you are cleaned out. After you get all the gunk out, you will feel much better.
2. A Chinese herb called "Bi Yan Pian." Here's where I order it:

If you have a Chinese herb shop around, you can get it cheaper there. There aren't any within 2 hours of my house though.:( I found it when I was in Nevada and got realy sick, but had no insurance and needed to wait until I got home to go to my normal doc. I bought 60 of them for $1.99 plus tax, and after two doses I felt good as new and had no more problems. In the two years since I've been taking it, I've only had 1 sinus infection and that was because I neglected to order more and ran out. The kicker: my doctor even uses them now and he loves them!

Use warm moist compresses over your forehead and area under your eyes. Or, take a warm, steamy shower and inhale as much steam as possible. Repeat either or both activities as needed to relieve sinus pressure. If you have or can get a humidifier, let it run in your room while you sleep. It should give you some relief.

If it is that bad you really ought to see a doctor. You can't take ibuprofen every 3 to 4 hours because it builds up as dangerously toxic in your blood stream. You can tell by having ringing in the ears.or having a "full" feeling in your ears as if you are under water.
