That will answer all the confusion about those 2 important dates depending how you travel to the other country.



Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

From what I heard, its the end of January 2007 when flying, but not till December 31st 2007 when crossing by car, train, or sea. Right now, a valid drivers licence, OHIP card, along with birth certificate, or any immigration papers is good enough.

If you fly - January 2007, if you drive, it now isn't until June 2009.

Currently, you can drive across the boarder with a birth certificate and drivers license.
