The bobbin is an integral part of the machine. Without it no way to get the thread where you need it.

Yes ,you need the bobbin to complete the stitch.The bobbin thread is pulled to the top and makes the stitch with the roll of thread on the top of the machine.. Did that make since to you?

When you sew something together there are actually two separate pieces of thread. One goes through the needle and the other is wrapped on the bobbin. As the needle goes down and transects the bobbin it creates a stitch. if you had no bobbin then you wouldn't able to complete a stitch because there is nothing for the needle thread to "stitch" with.

You have to use a bobbin, it goes underneath the needle under the metal plate - to catch the stitch from the needle with another thread and bind the stitching.
