Both for Muslims and Christians Hadji is a prefix meaning you have been to the Holy Land (Mecca or Jerusalem). And the prefix goes to the first name, not the surname. Eg if someone is called Stavros Papadopoulos, he then becomes Hadjistavros Papadopoulos and thus Hadjistavros turns into a nickname and then a surname.

View that most Greek surnames are derived from nicknames, "Hadji" became a prefix to the surname, e.g. Hadjinicolas or Hadjimanolis etc. of the people who went to a
Christian pilgrimage to the river Jordan where Christ according to the Bible was baptized.
P.S. in the dictionary the word Hadji is spelled Hajji

this is a prefix to the personal name which signifies that this person made the holy pilgrimage to the Holy Land - which many '
Greek Orthodox want to do. it was considered a mark of honor to bear this title in the name.
