I've got a 16 year old cat that, within the past year, has begun throwing up whenever he's displeased with us. He'll hack if he doesn't get fed on time (by HIS standards, which is the moment we wake up and the moment we walk through the door in the evening), he'll throw up on the chair of the person who scolded him or woke him from a nap, if we're eating something he wants (and not sharing) he'll hack under the table.

It's not random. He doesn't throw up if no one is home or if no one is watching him, or if he's recently gotten a "treat" of any kind.

Any idea how I can train him OUT of this unhealthy and messy habit?

ok--kitty wants attention at times you are not able/willing to give.....you answered your own question, friend--you said he is good if he has just gotten a treat--why not give him a treat just before you sit to eat--or feed him something he wants in an area close by where you eat at the same time you eat----little things like this help your insecure kitty feel more loved--they are very social kritters--give him a little more attention and affection and feed him when you eat, in the same room--talk to him--by now he understands what you say---let him know you still love him even tho he is a pita--love him and let him know that nothing has changed and he is still your special kitty.
he should come around nicely..

When he starts his temper tantrum take and put him in a room with his litter and paper on the floor. He will get the message that you will not be putting up with his actions. Right now he gets what he wants when he does the throwing up. Cut out the treats and feed him less during the day. One good meal before bed and he won't have a reason to wake you in the am so early

But try the room thing for awhile. Since he is old he feels things should recoil around him only. No Way.

Try giving him a small hairball treatment every time he does this. Cats don't like this and he will realize eventually that it's not going to work anymore. also look into an automatic feeder for him you can get it at pet smart. Pet smart also has professional pet trainers to help you.

At this age, there are multiple medical reasons for this behavior-kidney failure, liver disease, hypothyroidism, diabetes, to name a few. A checkup and some blood work to rule these out should be done before you try to train him out of this.

i dont think its any thing to do with attention seeking its probely just coinsedance.
i should really get to the vet, it can be a sign of diabetes especially if its a older cat and if over weight.
has he lost weight reciently or doese he drink a lot.

theise are all signs of diabetes so keep a eye open.

Im going to guess the same way that you would treat kids who do naughty things for attention. Don't give them what ever it is they want when they display their 'tantrums'. If the cats pukes because it wants to be fed, don't feed it right away. If it's because it wants something you have, don't give it to him. I would think eventuallly it would lean. Cats are like that...they are not stupid by anymeans.

Either that or maybe it's time to get rid of the cat.
