Three sailors sail into port and decide to share a hotel room. So they walk to a nearby hotel and are told that a room costs $10 each ($30). They pay the money and are then escorted to the room by the bellhop. After the bellhop returns to the front desk, the manager says: “Those sailors seemed very nice, I think I will give them a discount.” He then gives $5 to the bellhop and tells him to return it to the three men. On the way to the room the bellhop thinks to himself “They aren’t so nice, they didn’t give me a tip. I think I will keep $2 dollars for myself.” He then arrives at the room and gives the sailors $3 dollars back.
So they really only paid $9 dollars each.
9X3 = 27, bellhop kept $2, which equals $29, what happened to the other dollar?

The question tries to confuse with math. the sailors pay 10 each for 30. the manager gives back 5, 2 of which the bellhop keeps. So, the math is the hotel gets 25 plus the 2 the bellhop keeps plus the 3 given back to the sailors for a total of 30.

The explanation is misleading, because they didn't pay $9 each. When the manager gives the bellhop $5, that amount is subtracted from the total value of all of the sailor's money. That means that if you divide $25 by 3, and add $1, you get $9.33 repeating, which is how much each sailor paid. The $2 dollars that was subtracted from the total amount goes into the bellhop's pocket and accounts for the difference.
So, in conclusion
$8.33 x 3(sailors) + $3 (1 dollar per sailor) + $2 (amount the bellhop pockets) = $30, plain and simple.

They paid $25 for the room. They got $3 back plus the $2 the bellhop kept. 25+3+2=30

This is kind of faulty logic i think. They didn't pay $27. They paid $28. The room originally cost $30. The Manager returns $5. So $30 - $5 = $25. The bellhop kept $2. $25 + 2 = $27. The bell hop returned $3. $27 + $3= $30.

they payed $10 each. the bellhop was given $5 back. out of that 5 he kept 2. so that's $25 for the hotel, $2 for the bellhop and $3 for the sailors. what missing dollar? that equals $30 as far as i can tell.

The bellhop kept $2 so the sailors only paid $28 or $9.33 each. If each sailor had a share in the "tip" they gave the bellhop 66c each ( equates to $10 in total). but......
The bellhop gave them $3 back so each paid $8.33. A total of $25. Add the bellhops $2 and that makes a total of $27.
Who the hell stole the $3???

There is no extra dollar. Giving 1 dollar to each of them means that they paid only 9 dollars. and the 2 dollars the bellhop kept should have been returned to the manager.

They paid $25. for the room, put $3. back in their pockets, the bellhop kept $2. -- Looks like $30 to me, no dollar left over.

The issue is one of accounting for the right number – in this case, the $25, not $30. In other words, subtract the $2 from the $27 ($9 x 3), which equals $25 – the amount that the innkeeper retained.
