i am racking my brain on what to get my mail man for christmas and i was wondering should i get him anything at all

My mail carrier is a woman and i've gotten to know her rather well over the years. She handles the many packages i send and receive with a grace and good humor that's far, far beyond the call of duty. She's a good person and incredibly good at her job.
For those reasons, each December i send a letter of appreciation and commendation to the local and regional branches of the U.S. Postal Service (you can get the info from the phone book) and leave her a festive container of holiday cookies with a card telling her how much i appreciate her commitment to doing an exceptional job throughout the year.

As a casual mail handler all throughout college from Thanksgiving to Christmas, I will never, never, never send fruit or cheese as a gift for the holidays. I've unloaded tractor-trailers of that stuff by hand and it is backbreaking work. Should only the letter carrier be rewarded? As a propane and fuel oil deliverman for Sunoco, I was not allowed to accept any monetary tip either. After you finished trudging through snowdrifts with the heavy hose making their delivery, hiking back to the truck, retracting the hose, printing the invoice, and walking back to the customer's door with the bill, you get some sarcastic remark about the price of gas (which I have nothing to do with). What was really nice during the holidays as a deliveryman/mail handler was the gift of fresh bread or Christmas cookies from the lady customers, or a disposable cup of hot tea, coffee or cocoa from the guys. I never had time to stop for myself on such a tight schedule, and these thoughtful gestures helped me keep going, in the post office and out on the road.

It's not a fun job being a mail man and if he's been nice and friendly you should give him a litle something if you want
I would say give him a giftcard to a department store or somewhere were he can get something he likes and wants, it could be a small quantity of money and i'm sure he'll feel grateful.

My mailman took the effort to become friends with my dog when he was on the chain instead of being nasty to him when he barked at him. We are new in the neighborhood and the dog and I sat on the porch in nice weather. My dog looks forward to his pets now and he helps me with the mail and always has time to say hello.
My garbage man returns my cans for me because I am disabled and I am giving him money. I think it is how you are treated to decide whether to give a gift.

I never had given the mailman any gift for Christmas since they do get paid a good wage. Unless he has gone out of his way to hand you packages, not just throw them on the porch, or did some other extraordinary thing I wouldn't worry.
My cousin was a mailman for 40 years and did a lot of kindness's for the people on his route all those years. So they did at times leave him cash in a card or a bottle of wine.

If he/she is nice and delivers packages and goes out of his way to help out, then a gift card $15 or $20 would be nice. Make it for a local restaurant or even a card for gasoline. Our mailman is a grouchy, lazy guy. Our UPS man rocks, so he will get a small gift. You can also make homemade cookies. :)

You are not supposed to give governement employees money, as it is seen as a tip. My mom is a mail carrier, and she gets lots of homemade gifts every Christmas. She loves receiving homemade breads and cookies!

If you feel obligated to get him anything money is best. If you think money is too vulgar how about a gift certificate? He does not want your food or anything else home made.
But keep in mind he is just doing a job. He is not doing you any special favors. He gets paid to put your mail in the box. I doubt he is going to start working any better or worse for you if you don't tip him.
