Sounds like you're doing great on Lexapro and I'm glad you feel a positive effect. It usually takes 4 - 6 weeks for any type of antidepressant to reach it's full potential and most minor side effects dissapear within the first 2 weeks.

Since Lexapro effects your Serotonin, it's normal to experience a change in sleep, as serotonin is the neurotransmitter that effects your sleep.

I don't feel that Xanax is an appropriate in treating insomnia for anyone; most Dr's I know feel the same way. Xanax is great in treating acute panic attacks and seizures. Xanax is very addicting, where if you take it regularly, you'll build dependance and when you stop, you'll experience a very harsh and dangerous withdrawal. This certainly won't help with your depression.

If you still have problems with sleep, there are other non-addicting alternatives that you can take while you get used to the Lexapro. I would ditch the xanax as soon as possible (if you do, talk to your Dr. about the discontinuation effects and how to safely stop taking it).

I feel your insomnia will eventually go away soon and that you'll work well with the Lexapro. Give it a month before you give up on Lexapro - it's worked quite well for a lot of people I know.

Hope you feel better

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

It is common to have unwanted side effects when starting an anti-depressant. A lack of sleep will probably make you symptoms worse. You should see the Dr and discuss alternative medications. It often takes trying 2 or 3 different medications before you find the right one for you. It's also important to look at supportive strategies for your depression and anxiety to compliment any medication. The relapse rate for people who receive some kind of counselling or psychology is lower than for those who take medication alone.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.
