Landing Gear

2006-12-09 05:25:49 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

An airplane is without doubt a machine, so there are many gears incorporated into the design of many aircraft, but there are also some that have no gears at all.
1st of all there is the landing gear, but I am certain that this is not the kind of gear that you were asking about in your question.
In the aircraft that I fly most of the gears that are to be found are either in the engine, or are attached to it, so I can assure you that there are gears.

Yes, some do. A cessna 175 has a Continental 0-300 engine with a reduction gear drive to reduce prop speed. That is the only type of gear I have heard of , if your talking as in a transmission like a car, no, there is no such airplane with a 4 i the floor, stick shift or automatic. You may find one with a fith under the seat,

RE:
does an airplane have gears?

Some do.

Propellers are limited in speed to about 2700RPM for light aircraft to 1200RPM for large aircraft. To allow for small (and light) engines to produce more power, many aircraft engines (and all turbo props) have reduction gears to allow a high engine speed and slow propeller speed.

The reduction gears are only for one ratio. There is no 'gear change' on reduction gearboxes.

Many propellers are variable-pitch which would be the equivalent to a CVT (Continuously variable transmission) in a car. Fixed pitch props are like only having one gear. A climb prob is like low gear and a cruise prop is like high gear.

if you mean landing gears then they do.
If you mean flying gears that do with the engine they don't. (only a very very few)
If you mean wheel gears then some airplanes built for special objectives d

The only type of gears a plane has, and that is landing gear. There arent gears like a car, but landing gear for take-off / landin !

No, not like a car does. Some propellor drivin aircraft have variable pitch props that function in a similar way as gears. The wheels, tires and struts and the mechanism that raises and lowers them are referred to as Landing Gear.

Yes, usually every machine which have variable speed controls have gears, it may be manual or automatic. As the discussion goes, certainly, planes also have gears, Landing or Flying or Internal mostly auto controlled, i.e. Automatic gear transmission system. I think no further discussion required for.

Yes.

Depends on the type of aircraft to tell WHERE those gears are, and what they do, but almost ALL aircraft have gears on them in some form, from a Piper Cub to a Boeing 747.
